This section contains various information about HyperBox’s capabilities and assorted Tips.
Disk and Memory use
The HyperBox extension uses less than 120k of hard disk space and less than 40k of RAM. HyperBox does not use any processor resources when it is not selected. A bench test showed no performance degradation with HyperBox installed.
Tracking files
HyperBox ‘tracks’ files to keep the links current. You can rename and move any linked file and HyperBox will try to find it. Every time you open a linked document, HyperBox updates its internal links if the file has been moved or renamed.
Saving files
HyperBox stores links in the document’s Resource fork. This provides the ability to send files to other users. However, some applications don’t save HyperBox’s information when you Quit the program. After creating links, you should manually Save the file before quitting.
Selecting ‘Save As’
Applications don’t ‘know about’ HyperBox’s resources and will not copy the links if you select ‘Save As’. If you want to duplicate the file and the HyperBox links, use the ‘Duplicate’ command from the Finder’s File menu.
Customizing Sounds
You can use ResEdit or another Resource Editor to paste customized sounds into HyperBox.
1) Make a copy of ~HyperBox
2) Open the copy with ResEdit
3) Copy the sound and paste it in the ‘snd ’ resource as follows:
Sound ID
Open 128
Create 129
Modify 130
Delete 131
4) Save changes to the ~HyperBox copy
5) Move the original ~HyperBox out of the Extensions folder. Move the ~HyperBox copy into the Extensions folder and, optionally, rename it. Then Restart to load the new sounds.
Renaming ~HyperBox
The tilde (~) is in front to force HyperBox to load after Macintosh Easy Open. If you don’t use Easy Open, you may remove the tilde.
